Have you been using a free gmail, hotmail, or yahoo account for your business email address? Stop doing that RIGHT NOW! Yes, I am shouting! Read on to learn more about why you should stop using that free account, and get a professional email address instead.
1. Adding your domain name to your email address improves your brand recognition.
Do you work for Google? Hotmail? Yahoo? AOL? No? Then why are you advertising for them with your email address? Make your email address work for your brand, and not someone else’s brand.
2. It’s more identifiable and memorable.
Which of these tells the recipient that it’s coming from a business?
- primates1224@hotmail.com
- janet@primateproject.org
I hope you picked the second option, because you can easily tell that’s coming from someone at Primate Project, and not some random person with a hotmail account. The first one looks like it might be from a spammer, and there’s a good chance that it will automatically end up in the recipients spam folder.
Plus that second email address is a lot easier for me to remember. When I need to write an email to Janet, I can start typing her name in the “to” field, instead of having to remember that funky email address from hotmail.
3. It’s not as expensive as you might think
You can get a domain name for less than $20 per year, and if you already have a website, you already paid for that domain name. Why aren’t you already using it with your email address?
Some domain registrars will give you an email account when you register your domain name. It might even be free! Even if you don’t get a free or very cheap email account that way, you still have options.
We use G Suite for Google for our email accounts. It’s only $6 per month per account, and comes with a lot of great features, including shared calendars and video conferencing.
Your grand total for a full year of a professional email address comes out to less than $100. I bet that using that email address will result in more than $100 worth of business.
So now what?
